Washing Machine Efficiency

is a hot topic in todays world.

The Department of Energy has cracked down on washing machine manufacturers forcing them to become more efficient.

From shorter washing cycles to less water to new designs and energy Star ratings for machines, we live in a world which is far more efficient than that which our parents experienced.

Today's world is also far more convenient. The energy Star rating means that a motor has capacitors built in to smooth out the electricity consumption. These motors use far less electricity than the older generation.

Energy efficiency also costs more to purchase. The major energy saving innovation today is the front (or side) loading washing machine. This design uses one third of the water that an efficient top loading washing machine needs. The less water that is used, the less thermal energy is needed from electricity to heat the water. And the cycle continues: since there is only one third of the water, one needs less laundry detergent.

Furthermore, the tumbling motion of a side loading machine uses gravity to fold clothes over in a gentle rolling motion. This action is a far more aggressive cleaning motion than that provided by a top loader, but also more gentle on the clothes.
